Ancestral Puebloan structure with negative handprints painted above, Bears Ears National Monument, San Juan County, Utah

This image was taken in the newly-designated Bears Ears National Monument. The National Monument preserves one of the most significant cultural resource areas in North America, composed of over 13,000 years of human occupancy, over 100,000 estimated archaeological sites, and active ceremonial sites for present-day tribes.

Actions from the Trump administration exclude many of the sites included in this gallery from the protections of a National Monument. These eviscerated sacred places are at an increased risk of development.
